Whimsical children’s play coming to the Players’ Ring Theatre with a professional production and a community reading
PORTSMOUTH – Blast off on a magical, starry-eyed family adventure when the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine brings the well-loved tale of “The Little Prince” to the Players’ Ring Theatre for two showings on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.Written by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar, based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and directed by Allison McCall, this timeless story will enchant everyone who sees it in the Ring’s intimate black box theatre.
When a pilot crash-lands in the desert, he meets an unexpected new friend—a mysterious boy from a faraway asteroid with stories that sparkle like the stars. From lighting lamps with a speedy Lamplighter to puzzling over grown-ups and befriending a clever, tail-twitching Fox, the Little Prince takes audiences on a whimsical journey through the universe.
Filled with wonder, laughter, and heart, this enchanting tale invites young dreamers to see the world through new eyes. With imaginative storytelling, stunning puppets, and a message that shines bright, “The Little Prince” is a tender, timeless treat for children and their grown-ups.
This production is perfect for children ready to explore deeper themes of friendship, love, and adventure—while still being full of wonder and magic for audiences of all ages.
“There are so many reasons this project fills me with joy,” said the Players’ Ring Executive Director Margherita Giacobbi.
“The Ring hasn’t traditionally been known as a destination for family theatre — and that’s something we’re determined to change. If we want to welcome new audiences into our little gem of a theatre, children are where we begin. We want to dissolve the idea that live performance is rare, intimidating, or inaccessible before that barrier ever has a chance to form.”
And then… there’s The Little Prince. Even people who haven’t read it recognize its wisdom — ‘What is essential is invisible to the eye’ or ‘It is only with the heart that one can see rightly,’ Giacobbi added.
“This adaptation carries that same poetry. It’s tender, funny, and profound — a piece that moves adults just as deeply as children,” she said.
“The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine has captured the beauty of this story with extraordinary care: professional actors, stunning costumes, and puppetry that feels like it stepped out of a dream. “
At a time when arts resources are even scarcer than usual for art organizations, collaboration with high-caliber, like-minded partners is not just meaningful — it’s essential, Giacobbi said.
“While the Ring is proud of the shows we create ourselves, bringing exceptional touring productions to our stage is a smart, efficient, and joyful way to share excellence with our community,” she said.
“We are deeply grateful to the New England Foundation for the Arts and the NEST grant for making this collaboration possible. Support like this strengthens connections across New England. I truly hope audiences come experience it. This story has a way of stealing your heart."
