Take colorful fabric, cut it apart, then sew it back together in intriguing shapes, patterns and images — it’s what quilters have been doing for centuries.
Think there’s nothing new in that? Well, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Gobsmacked, even.
On October 13-14, 2018 at the Rochester Community Center, the Cocheco Quilters Guild holds its 37th annual show, Modern with a Twist.
And what a show! Come see some 200 wildly colorful bed quilts, wall hangings and other examples of the quilter’s art, both modern and traditional. Stay for the raffles, handmade gift boutique, craft vendors and door prizes. Stay for lunch, too, because that’s also on offer.
For nearly four decades, the Cocheco Quilters Guild has been meeting in Dover, NH on the third Tuesday of each month. Some 175 members enjoy speakers drawn from the top ranks of this perennially popular art form — the number one hobby in America. They attend workshops and major quilting conventions. They also get involved in smaller “bees,” specialized groups that focus on some sub-set of quilting like modern art or Civil War reproduction quilts.
The guild is big on charitable giving, too. All proceeds from ticket sales for its annual raffle quilt go to support member-chosen worthy causes. The guild’s Community Quilts committee also donates hundreds of member-made quilts to local hospitals, children’s homes, hospice centers, veterans’ groups, and many other recipients.
