About the artist:
Enrico Riley (b. 1973, Westbury, Connecticut) creates large figurative paintings that explore themes of hope, music, and perseverance as part of an unfolding and the evolving cycle of work investigating historical and contemporary violence, martyrdom, grief, and the middle passage. The thirteen paintings and three drawings presented in the exhibition evoke real and imagined events, linking the old world and new through memory, resilience, and aspiration, ultimately expressing optimism in the ability to overcome the hardship and violence perpetrated on Black Americans. The works of art convey Riley’s faith in humanity, offering the positive means to break the cycle of injustice and the hope it can be accomplished.
