Opening Reception: Friday, October 18th, 6-8 pm
This October, The Art Center presents NORMALIZING ABORTION: Portraits & Stories, a pro-choice
photographic exhibit and fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. This show will feature selfies, self-portraits,
and stories from people who have terminated a pregnancy and wish to share their experience in order to
Approximately 1 in 4 American women will have an abortion at some point in her lifetime. This means
abortion is a common part of reproductive healthcare and a normal part of our collective experience. Yet,
news coverage of the issue has sensationalized abortion by addressing only the most extreme cases, those involving rape, incest, or a woman who’s life is at risk. Normalizing Abortion seeks to share the
experiences of those who have chosen to end a pregnancy because it was the right choice at the right time, for them; and to affirm the importance of abortion access in ensuring our human right of self-
determination. In addition, all proceeds gathered from submissions and donations will be given to
Planned Parenthood Federation of America to support their vital work in our community and around the
world. Submissions are still welcome and being accepted through September 23rd.
An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, October 18th, 6-8 pm at The Art Center. The Reception
will feature a gathering of pro-choice groups and political candidates. A projection of digital submissions
and stories will be on display for the evening along with the framed work in the gallery show. The
reception is free and open to the public.
