Museum docent Paul Timmerman will be holding a speaker event about the 1st New Hampshire Light Artillery’s involvement in the Civil War. The talk is to be held at the Woodman Museum and begins at 7pm on Thursday, September 20. The event is free to members and $5 for non-members. Timmerman will recount the history of New Hampshire’s only Light Artillery battery in the war to preserve the Union. Recruited from the Manchester area, these New Hampshire men saw combat in the eastern theatre of the war from August 1862 to May 1865. The soldiers of the 1st NH Light Artillery, despite their northern origin, participated in most of the campaigns and battles alongside the Army of the Potomac. The lecture will feature highlights of the battery’s participation in the battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor and the Confederate retreat to Appomattox. Timmerman, a seasoned Civil War reenactor, will also explain the organization of a period artillery battery and the loading and firing of a cannon. The Woodman Museum is also using the occasion to ask for donations for the restoration of one of its Adopt-an-Artifact program treasures, a Civil War-era “Napoleon” cannon, one of only ten surviving examples of this type of cannon with the attached original carriage, limber and ammunition box. The second Woodman Speaker Series event is sponsored by C&J Transportation, Dupont’s Service Center and Summit Land Development. The Woodman Museum is located at 182 Central Avenue in Dover, NH. Free parking is available along Central Avenue and Summer Street. For additional information or sponsorship opportunities please contact director@ woodmanmuseum.org or call (603) 742-1038.
