“WAYNE’S WAR” -- ACTIVE RETIREMENT AS...Description
The Active Retirement Association (ARA) offers programs reflecting the many interests of people 50+ years old, retired or not. Please join us to meet new friends, sample delicious refreshments, and learn more about the ARA and its upcoming activities at our General Meeting on Monday, March 18, 1:30 p.m., Durham Evangelical Church (lower level), 114 Dover Road (Route 108), Durham, NH. The program will feature Dr. Wayne Burton, nationally recognized educator and current Durham Town Council member, discussing his new book, Wayne’s War. Wayne’s War chronicles the author’s experience as a staff officer and company commander in the 9th Infantry Division during Operation Speedy Express in 1968–69 in the Mekong Delta. Grounded in the 240 letters he wrote to his wife Betsy during this time, as well as experiences before and since, the book describes the conflict between duty and conscience he encountered at a personal level that the country experienced nationally, both during the Vietnam War and the decades that follow. His unit’s mission of winning the hearts and minds of the people through mechanisms bordering on genocide begot his disillusionment, causing him to rethink most of what he’d been taught to believe. His later life was built on his new beliefs, sending him on pathways he never anticipated before participating in the war. Dr. Burton served almost five decades in higher education leadership, his last thirteen as President of North Shore Community College in Massachusetts. He was educated at Bowdoin College (AB), UNH (MBA), and Vanderbilt University (EdD). Commissioned through Bowdoin College’s ROTC program, he served on active duty from 1966–69. His civilian public service ranges from UNH Student Trustee, to four-term NH State Representative, to Town Councilor, to Strafford Regional Planning Commission member, and much more. As a member of the Durham Energy Committee, he was deeply involved in developing the second largest municipal solar project in the state, which will power most of Durham’s facilities and buildings in the Oyster River School District. Currently the ARA has approximately 360 members from over 40 communities in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts who support the organization by annual dues. We offer lectures, discussion groups, films, cultural tours, walks/hikes, classes, special-interest groups, and much more!
