No doubt lost or low-paying jobs lead to hunger and ill health, even homelessness. Who are these people living virtually next door, and are they being helped? Vulnerable Family “Portraits,” a talk by University of New Hampshire Researcher Dr. Jessica Carson, will introduce us to people at risk and what is being done to help them. The Zoom presentation at 10:00 AM on October 28, hosted by the Active Retirement Association, is free and open to the public, and there will be time to ask Dr. Carson questions. Non-Association members may attend one program per semester. Register by emailing araseacoast@gmail.com. Please include your name, the program title Vulnerable Family “Portraits,” and the community where you reside. The topic is especially relevant as the country grapples with COVID-19 and the upcoming election. Dr. Carson is a research assistant professor at UNH’s Vulnerable Families Research Program in the Carsey School of Public Policy. She joined the Carsey School in 2010. She studies poverty, work and the social safety nets to support low-income workers with affordable health insurance, food assistance and quality child care. The Vulnerable Families Research Program itself focuses on understanding how families are faring economically across the nation, within regions states, and across rural, suburban, and urban places. Sponsoring several public programs every year, the Active Retirement Association (ARA) is for people 50 and over, retired or not. Based in Durham, NH, the all-volunteer organization serves people everywhere, with members in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and beyond. Originally sparked by and still affiliated with the University of New Hampshire, the ARA is committed to “Expanding Your World” in person or via Zoom by offering lectures, workshops, discussion groups, films, cultural tours, walks/hikes, special-interest groups, and much more. For additional information, visit www.unh.edu/ara or email info@ara-nh.org for membership information. See us on Facebook at Active Retirement Association. The ARA, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, is not affiliated with any political, religious, ethnic, or special interest group.
