Spinners, knitters, and fiber arts enthusiasts of all kinds are invited to spend a day learning about natural plant dyes from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, October 14 at Rollinsford’s historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House. In cooperation with the SouthEast New Hampshire Spinners Guild, the Wentworth House will host Natural Dye Day, a free education day on dying wool with plant-based dyes.
Throughout the day, visitors can learn about natural plant dyes, and dye some wool using plant materials including blackeyed Susan, king’s clover, goldenrod, Queen Anne’s lace, onion skin, red marigold, osage orange, indigo, lac, cochineal, jewel weed, rocket lettuce, and burdock, all locally harvested or from The Yarn Tree. One ounce prepared wool skeins will be provided free of charge for the dye baths. If desired, visitors may bring a two ounce skein, not mordanted but fully wetted out, to dye in a walnut dye bath on the traditional fire.
Spend the day learning and having fun with dyes at this rain or shine event. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lunch and their wheel or spindle and fiber to spin during wait times, and tours of the circa 1701 Wentworth House will also be available. For more specific information about the day’s schedule, send an email to ocskolnick@gmail.com
