Seacoast Nocturne by The Abstract Four\, a close group of painters who have exhibited together regularly for the past decade. They all bring distinct interpretations to common themes\, pushing each other to stretch their ideas and offer fresh\, engaging art. Barbara Adams\, Tom Glover\, Dustan Knight\, and Peter Cady are the artists behind this buzzing celebration of Portsmouth nightlife that explores the energy and color\, drawing visitors to the working waterfront\, restaurants\, and summer festivals. Flesh & Framework by artist Sarah Picard\, an intimate exhibition exploring the fragility of the internal self and the inherited structures that distort feminine identity. External ideas about beauty\, worth\, and womanhood can become so deeply absorbed that they're indistinguishable from one's own voice\, and the artist honestly explores the disconnect between her inner and outer facing identities often imposed by others. Using oil\, pastel\, charcoal\, and found materials\, Picard layers figures and uncalculated\, gestural marks to assert the fragmentation\, dissolution\, and doubling that occurs in the feminine body. Born This Way by artist Carol Whalen\, an exhibition that explores the interconnectedness of the natural world and human experience. Through playful and imaginative compositions\, Whalen challenges perceived divisions between living things\, suggesting that all life shares the same fundamental desire: to live\, thrive\, and flourish. A desire which can best be met through connection and collaboration. Seacoast Nocturn\, Flesh & Framework\, and Born This Way will be on view at the New Hampshire Art Association's Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery\, 136 State St\, Portsmouth\, NH\, 03801\, from July 1st to 26th\, with an opening reception on July 3rd\, 5-8 pm.
