“HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND THE CHILD MIGR...Description
The Active Retirement Association (ARA) offers programs reflecting the many interests of people 50+ years old, retired or not. Please join us to meet new friends, sample delicious refreshments, and learn more about the ARA and its upcoming activities at our October General Meeting on Monday, October 17, 2016, 1:30 pm, Durham Evangelical Church (lower level), 114 Dover Road (Route 108), Durham, NH. The program will feature Dr. Cory Smith discussing “Human Trafficking and the Child Migrant Crisis in the Americas.” Dr. Smith’s presentation will address causes and effects of a growing humanitarian crisis. The burgeoning flow of unaccompanied child migrants from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras to the United States has been driven by horrific levels of violence and homicide, particularly violence against women and girls. This humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by the lack of basic legal representation for unaccompanied children within U.S. immigration courts, and by Obama administration policies toward recent refugee women and children. Despite the interdiction and enforcement efforts of the U.S. and Mexico, the numbers of unaccompanied children seeking protection continue to rise and may reach 80,000 in 2016. Dr. Cory Smith is Vice President for Policy, Advocacy and Communications at the Washington-DC-based organization, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), which arranges volunteer legal representation for unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children in their deportation proceedings. Dr. Smith has long advocated for vulnerable populations by ensuring the protection of human rights, immigrants’ rights, and civil liberties through federal legislation, appropriations, and executive branch measures. He holds a J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law (2000), is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, and serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of New Hampshire School of Law. Currently the ARA has almost 350 members from 35 communities in southern Maine and New Hampshire, who support the organization by annual dues. We offer lectures, discussion groups, films, cultural tours, walks/hikes, classes, special-interest groups, and much more!
