“CHALLENGES & SATISFACTIONS OF TODAY’...Description
The Active Retirement Association (ARA) offers programs reflecting the many interests of people 50+ years old, retired or not. Please join us to meet new friends, sample delicious refreshments, and learn more about the ARA and its upcoming activities at our General Meeting on Monday, October 15, 2018, 1:30 pm, Durham Evangelical Church (lower level), 114 Dover Road (Route 108), Durham, NH. The program will feature Howard Altschiller, General Manager and Executive Editor at Seacoast Media Group, discussing “Challenges and Satisfactions of Today’s Media Business.” If you’ve wondered what the future will bring for information dissemination as we’ve known it, here’s your chance to learn more. Fifty years ago, we kept up with local, national, and world news via newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. Today, print media are being supplanted by on-line journalism, from mainstream media outlets to blogs and other self-published sources, and the nature of broadcast news is changing as well. Mr. Altschiller, whose organization publishes the Portsmouth Herald, Foster’s Daily Democrat, Exeter News-Letter, Hampton Union, York County Coast Star, and York Weekly, along with the websites Seacoastonline.com and Fosters.com, is right at the center of this media revolution. Howard Altschiller, a cum laude graduate of Boston University, has been Seacoast Media Group’s executive editor since 2003 and general manager since January 2018. Previously he served as executive news editor at the New Bedford, Massachusetts, Standard-Times; city editor at the Portsmouth Herald, and editor of weekly newspapers in Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. The Seacoast Media Group is owned by Gatehouse Media, LLC. Mr. Altschiller has won numerous awards for news and editorial writing, and his papers repeatedly have been ranked best in New England for their circulation class. He lives in Stratham with his wife Debra, with whom he has three adult children, Marina, Connell, and Brady. Currently the Active Retirement Association has almost 400 members from 40 communities in New Hampshire and Maine, who support the organization by annual dues. We offer lectures, discussion groups, films, cultural tours, walks/hikes, classes, special-interest groups, and much more!
