Dover's mills were built to take advantage of the Cochecho River

You Say Cochecho, I say Cocheco...

"Let's Get The Whole Thing Straight"

Is it Cochecho with two "h's" or Cocheco with one "h?"  Here is the low down according to Trustee of the Woodman Institute Museum, Thom Hindle.  It's really quite simple.  It all goes back to a simple typographical error.

The original spelling of the word Cochecho is with two "h's."  Back in 1827 when registering the Cocheco Mill Manufacturing Company in Concord, NH, a clerical error was made, omitting the second "h".  Thus all references to the mill were with one "h", while references to the River remained with two "h's."

So remember folks, when you document things you could be changing history without even knowing it!

A striking example of this difference can be noted while standing on the Washington Street Bridge in downtown Dover.  The cornerstone in the mill complex refers to the "Cocheco Mill Manufacturing Company."

Turn slightly to your right and you will see the sign for the "Cochecho River."
